Education Committee Engages with Local Primary Schools on Area Planning

Over 40 representatives from primary schools across Northern Ireland attended an event for area planning, hosted by the Committee for Education in the Long Gallery, Parliament Buildings.

As part of its scrutiny role, the Committee is reviewing the area planning process. Area planning is the process being used by the Department of Education to streamline the schools' estate and tackle the 60,000+ empty places in Northern Ireland's schools.

The Department's consultation on primary school area plans is open until 30 June 2013. As such, the Committee took the opportunity at the event to hear the experiences, views and opinions of the school representatives regarding the draft Area Plans set out in the Department's consultation and how local solutions can be better facilitated and supported. In particular, the Committee was interested in views on how the Department of Education can better support schools and communities to develop their own local solutions to Area Planning challenges.

The Committee will continue to monitor the progress on area planning and press the Department for appropriate action.

In the interview below with the Committee Chairperson, Mr Mervyn Storey MLA, we ask what does area planning mean and how will it affect our schools?
